Your key is split in three — any two rebuild it

No single place holds your vault key, and we are not one of them. The key is split into three shares: one with your heir, one with Areen, and one in the printed recovery key you keep. Only two together can reconstruct it. Stealing one share means nothing at all.

What people ask before they trust us

Can you read what is in my vault?
No. Encryption happens on your device before anything leaves your browser, and the key is derived from a master password we never see. What we store is ciphertext, and we have nothing that can open it.
What if I forget my password?
Choose “Forgot password” on the sign-in page and answer that you have the key. The link you receive gets you back into your account; your vault contents are opened by the recovery key issued when you created the vault. Paste it on the vault recovery page the link opens, and your vault is re-bound to your new password. On the premium plan one heir must also approve. We cannot open your vault without that key.
I forgot my password and lost my recovery key. Do I lose my account?
No. Choose “Forgot password” and answer that you do not have the key. The link you receive sets a new password and starts you on an empty vault; you keep your account and subscription. Your old vault is not deleted straight away — we keep it, still encrypted, for 90 days. If you find your key in that time, contact support and we will restore it for you to open with the key. After starting fresh, send your heirs their shares again from the heirs page.
How do you know I have died?
We do not assume it. You receive a periodic message and confirm you are well with one tap. If you do not answer within the window you set, an additional waiting period begins, then a review before any release. One missed reply does not open the vault.
What happens if Areen shuts down?
The share design protects against exactly this: the share we hold is not required, because the two held by you and your heir are enough to reconstruct the key. Your data outliving us does not depend on us.
